Who We Are
SHARE is a consortium of five organisations that have come together to generate rigorous and relevant research for use in the field of sanitation and hygiene. SHARE is a five year initiative (2010-2015) funded by the UK Department for International Development.
The SHARE consortium is led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and includes the following partners: the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Control, Bangladesh; the International Institute for Environment and Development; Slum/Shack Dwellers International; and WaterAid.
The purpose of SHARE is to join together the energy and resources of the five partners in order to make a real difference to the lives of people all over the world who struggle with the realities of poor sanitation and hygiene.
SHARE will empower the individuals, agencies and organisations that are tasked with transforming the living conditions of those people. The five SHARE partners are shown below.
The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is Britain's national school of public health and a leading postgraduate institution worldwide for research and postgraduate education in global health. Part of the University of London, the London School is the largest institution of its kind in Europe with a remarkable depth and breadth of expertise encompassing many disciplines. It is one of the highest-rated research institutions in the UK.
The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research (ICDDR,B) is an international health research institution located in Dhaka. Dedicated to saving lives through research and treatment, ICDDR,B addresses some of the most critical health concerns facing the world today, ranging from improving neonatal survival to HIV/AIDS. In collaboration with academic and research institutions throughout the world, ICDDR,B conducts research, training and extension activities, as well as programme-based activities, to develop and share knowledge for global lifesaving solutions.
The International Institute for Environment and Development is a global leader in sustainable development. As an independent international research organisation, we are specialists in linking local to global. In Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, the Middle East and the Pacific, IIED works with some of the world's most vulnerable people to ensure they have a say in the policy arenas that most closely affect them — from village councils to international conventions.
Slum/Shack Dwellers International (SDI) is a confederation of country-level organisations (called ‘federations’) of the urban poor from 28 countries of the Global South (as of September 2008). It was launched in 1996 and became a formally registered entity in 1999. Several well-developed national federations of community-based organisations of slum and shack dwellers — particularly in India, South Africa and Thailand — joined hands to found SDI.
WaterAid's vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and sanitation. WaterAid transforms lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world's poorest communities. We work with partners and influence decision-makers to maximise our impact. WaterAid enables the world's poorest people to gain access to safe water and sanitation. Together with improved hygiene, these basic human rights underpin health, education and livelihoods, forming the first essential step in overcoming poverty.
